Fort McMurray

“Determined to stay..."

Fort McMurray is a city of contrasts: a thriving community with lively social, arts, and cultural activities as well as an important hub for the energy industry in Alberta.

The City of Fort McMurray is located in the heart of Canada’s boreal forest and surrounded by lakes that offer plentiful recreational opportunities. The community is also one of Canada’s most diverse cities, with more than 80 languages spoken in the area. Fort McMurray offers an outstanding quality of life, and this is one of the main reasons residents are choosing to stay and rebuild after the devastating wildfire earlier this year.

“Over an hour’s drive away from the nearest oil sands operation..."

Located 435 kilometres northeast of Edmonton, Fort McMurray is over an hour’s drive away from the nearest oil sands operation. In-and-around the city and surrounding communities, there are many ways to explore and enjoy the outdoors.

Explore hundreds of kilometres of trails through the city and four provincial parks in the area where you can enjoy your favourite activity. Even with the temporary closure of some park spaces due to the wildfire, many of the nearby parks are fully operational and ready to enjoy. Go hiking, horseback riding, or dirt biking in summer, or cross-country skiing, dogsledding, or snowmobiling in winter. Plentiful lakes also provide space to paddle, boat, fish, or simply observe the wildlife. You can even visit a moving desert in Maybelle River Wildland Park, where the shifting sands of the Athabasca Sand Dunes tower twelve metres tall.

“Hard working, family-focused, lively, and diverse, there is more to this city than most people know."
