Located 435 kilometres northeast of Edmonton, Fort McMurray is over an hour’s drive away from the nearest oil sands operation. In-and-around the city and surrounding communities, there are many ways to explore and enjoy the outdoors.

Explore hundreds of kilometres of trails through the city and four provincial parks in the area where you can enjoy your favourite activity. Even with the temporary closure of some park spaces due to the wildfire, many of the nearby parks are fully operational and ready to enjoy. Go hiking, horseback riding, or dirt biking in summer, or cross-country skiing, dogsledding, or snowmobiling in winter. Plentiful lakes also provide space to paddle, boat, fish, or simply observe the wildlife. You can even visit a moving desert in Maybelle River Wildland Park, where the shifting sands of the Athabasca Sand Dunes tower twelve metres tall.

Fort McMurray offers a full range of amenities and essential services.

For families with school-age children, educational options include several public, Catholic, and French immersion schools from Kindergarten to grade 12.

Locally-based Keyano College provides options for a range of in-house and transfer post-secondary programs, including certificate, diploma, and bachelor’s degree programs. Students can choose from degrees in Business Administration, Nursing, or Education, diplomas in Early Learning and Child Care or Environmental Technology, or trades and apprenticeship training as a Carpenter, Welder, or Millwright.

Discover a flourishing community with a range of clubs and associations, churches, community service organizations. Get involved in theatre, dance, and arts, and cultural groups geared towards adults, families, and children of all ages. The sports and recreation opportunities are excellent, with numerous parks and sports fields, and rinks for hockey, soccer, tennis, basketball, and softball among them.

The Suncor Leisure Centre and MacDonald Island Park provide a number of ways to stay active, including an NHL-sized arena, curling rink, climbing wall, fitness centre, dance studios, a running track, and an Olympic-sized indoor swimming pool. In addition, there’s an art gallery, public library, and indoor playground.
