The Developmental Pathways of Addiction & Mental Health (formerly InRoads) is a web-based interactive e-Learning curriculum designed to support healthcare providers to enhance their practice working with children, youth and their families experiencing Addiction & Mental Health issues. The focus of these modules is to help health providers recognize and reduce significant stressors for vulnerable children and their parents, enhance their resilience, and increase their coping skills. In providing mental health support to children and youth the focus needs to shift toward health promotion and disease prevention, rather than just treating the impact of mental health disorders.
The Developmental Pathways of Addiction & Mental Health curriculum consists of eleven (11) modules, which were developed within a framework of four key learning areas:
The modules are available on: Primary Health Care Learning Portal (search "developmental pathways").
Each module is approximately two hours in length and developed according to adult learning principles. The 11 modules are interactive, experiential, self-directed with a variety of reflective quizzes, case studies, self-assessments and videos.
Upon completion of each module the learner will be provided with a Certificate of Participation for 2 CME study credits per module. The learner has the option of completing all eleven (11) modules to obtain a maximum of 22 CME study credits.
The Developmental Pathways of Addiction & Mental Health Modules are an Accredited Self-Assessment Program (Section 3) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and approved by the University of Calgary Office of Continuing Medical Education and Professional Development.
The Developmental Pathways of Addiction & Mental Health supports AHS’ broader learning and development strategies as these modules add to already existing evidence-based resources. Specifically these modules help support better screening and early intervention by service providers in AHS and primary health care. This will lead to improved efficiency and effectiveness of our health system in responding to substance abuse/addiction treatment alone, or in concurrence with a mental health problem (concurrent disorder).
A primary care provider is often the first point of contact for Albertans with underlying or undiagnosed addiction or mental health problems, when accessing medical care for a physical illness. This learning strategy is effective because these patients have, or will establish, a relationship with the Primary Care Network (PCN) service providers. These modules are readily available to external partners and will provide evidence-based knowledge and skills needed to detect problematic addiction or mental health misuse, intervene appropriately (early intervention) and/or match clients to additional treatment services.
The Developmental Pathways of Addiction & Mental Health modules are not intended to replace any existing Addiction & Mental Health training, but rather to be complimentary to other resources.
