What does this job look like at AHS?

Nurse practitioners (also known as NPs) at AHS are registered nurses with advanced knowledge, skills and competencies. The role of the nurse practitioner involves a community-based scope of practice using advanced decision-making skills in assessment, diagnosis and care management.

Nurse practitioners provide health care services with focus on health promotion, prevention and rehabilitation within a defined scope of nursing practice. They perform comprehensive assessment, diagnosis (including the ordering and interpretation of tests), intervention (including the prescribing of medications), management, referral and evaluation of client care across the full continuum of health care services.

There are a variety of roles available for nurse practitioners at AHS. As the profession continues to grow, so do the opportunities for nurse practitioners. Nurse practitioners may also be referred to as a primary health care nurse practitioner (PHC NP), registered nurse-extended class (RN[EC]), acute care nurse practitioner (ACNP), clinical nurse specialist/nurse practitioner (CNS/NP), nurse practitioner-specialist (NP-S) or a specialty acute care nurse practitioner (SACNP).

Nurse practitioners at AHS work in a variety of health care settings including hospitals, community health centres, continuing care facilities, clinics, urgent care centres and within client homes. Nurse practitioners provide expert clinical care and work with a high degree of independence. Nurse practitioners play an important role and work in collaboration with other members of the health care team including physicians, nurses, therapists, technologists, administrative staff and managers.

Nurse Practitioners may work full-time or part-time hours or on a call-in (casual) basis. They can apply for positions that are permanent, temporary or casual depending on department and facility needs. Shift schedules may include a combination of day, evening, night, weekend and holiday shifts, as well as on-call duty.

Many nurse practitioners work in environments that are physically demanding and require different levels of physical exertion needed to lift, transfer patients and provide care. They may also be required to move or transport equipment during the course of their work. At times, nurse practitioners may work in challenging and stressful circumstances, such as in an emergency situation.
