Grande Prairie gets its name from the broad, sweeping plains that sprawl outward from the city in three directions. It’s an important rest stop for migrating trumpeter swans, giving it the nickname “Swan City.” Just south of town, the grasslands give way to boreal forest and foothills that stretch into the northernmost tip of the Canadian Rockies.

In this vibrant northern city you’ll discover a youthful, multicultural, and growing community. The majority of the population is in their early 30’s, with a median age of about 31, making it a great fit for young professionals and new families. Here, you’ll find shops, restaurants, pubs, and an active arts, social, and sports scene. Whatever your niche – you can find it here in Grande Prairie.

Families have plenty of education options from Pre-K to Grade 12, including post-secondary at Grande Prairie Regional College (GPRC). There’s numerous parks and playgrounds, and over 18 kilometres of walking trails to explore. You can embrace outdoor living at one of the numerous provincial parks in the surrounding area, some of which are only a 15 minute drive away.

Alberta’s newest dinosaur museum, the Philip J. Currie Museum opened its doors in 2015. It houses a plethora of fossils from prehistoric land, air, and water creatures that have been found in the nearby Pipestone Creek Bonebed, just 30 minutes outside of the city.

Grande Prairie offers many big-city benefits with the perks of a smaller community. You’ll experience shorter commute times, a lower cost of living, and outdoor adventures right at your doorstep, with all the amenities and services you expect from an urban centre.
