What does this job look like at AHS?

Therapy assistants fulfill the key roles of service provider, collaborator, lifelong learner and paraprofessional. They work directly with clients and caregivers, carrying out the care plans developed by therapists, audiologists or speech language pathologists. These treatment programs help patients participate in meaningful activities, function independently and communicate effectively.

Therapy assistants provide functional and goal‐oriented services that help clients perform exercises and movements. They also teach and support patients in learning or practising skills, lead activity sessions or provide education to clients, families and caregivers. They observe, document and report patient performance and behaviour to the supervising therapist, speech language pathologist or audiologist, and respond as appropriate. Therapy assistants may also set up for therapy sessions, prepare activities, create program materials, arrange client appointments and assist with care planning.

Therapy assistants work in a variety of health care settings including hospitals, clinics, within client homes and in continuing care and rehabilitation facilities. Although they often work one-on-one with patients, therapy assistants also work in partnership with other therapy assistants and aides, therapists, speech language pathologists, audiologists, physicians, nurses, volunteers and external service providers.

Therapy assistants may work full-time or part-time hours or on a call-in (casual) basis. They can apply for positions that are permanent, temporary or casual depending on department and facility needs. Shift schedules may include a combination of day, evening and weekend shifts.
