Registered psychiatric nurses (also known as RPNs) may work independently or as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team, which can include psychiatrists, physicians, psychologists and social workers. Registered psychiatric nurses are responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care. They provide evidence-informed, person-centered and recovery-oriented nursing care to patients and their care providers.
Some of the duties they will perform include completing health history and mental status assessments, administering and assessing the effects of medications, responding to observed behavioral changes and implementing strategies to promote optimal mental health, physical health, and overall well-being of their patients. Registered psychiatric nurses also provide education on a range of mental health and addiction topics to a variety of audiences and provide assistance in the evaluation/assessment of client-related physical health problems, issues and questions.
Registered psychiatric nurses who work in Corrections Health at AHS collaborate with healthcare professionals, correctional centre authorities in a safe and secure setting to provide quality patient care to adults and youth in custody. Opportunities exist for clinical, addictions and mental health practice with support from clinical experts in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
Registered psychiatric nurses spend much of their time in direct contact with patients and are employed at a number of different facilities including hospitals, community clinics, corrections and mental health facilities. During the course of their work, registered psychiatric nurses may be exposed to blood, bodily fluids, infectious diseases, chemicals and other safety hazards. Registered psychiatric nurses can also be exposed to potentially violent and aggressive situations when working with patients.
Registered psychiatric nurses may work full-time or part-time hours or on a call-in (casual) basis. They can apply for positions that are permanent, temporary or casual depending on department and facility needs. Shift schedules may include a combination of day, evening, night (select centers only), weekend and holiday shifts.
