Student Placement

Grow and stretch your skills

Does your education program require practical experience in a work setting with guidance from an experienced professional? Whether you are in a clinical or non-clinical profession AHS may have an opportunity for you.

A student placement is any unpaid practice education experience (also called placement, practicum, clinical, fieldwork, internship, experiential learning, etc.) that is a requirement of an educational program.

Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Information

IMPORTANT: Update on Single Site Order

The Single Site Order ended on February 15, 2022.

Students and/or instructors may be in concurrent placements across multiple long-term care or designated supportive living facilities and are required to follow applicable policies.

If students and/or instructors have any questions, they are encouraged to email Student.Placements@ahs.ca.

Continuous Masking

Continuous masking remains in place at all AHS facilities across the province. This directive continues to be applicable to all staff, physicians, designated support individuals, and visitors, province wide. The AHS COVID-19 PPE Task Force will continue to monitor research from respected sources, and provide ongoing guidance based on the latest evidence.

Daily Fit for Work Screening

Use the online tool to complete the Daily Fit for Work Screening questionnaire. Login with your AHS account information and complete the screening before coming to work. Help reduce the spread of COVID-19 and protect our community. To learn more, please see ahs.ca/fitforwork.

Immunization

All health care students and instructors must be immunized according to the AHS Standards and AHS Immunization or Testing of Workers for COVID-19 policy.

Clinical Placements

A clinical placement is one where the individual is in a position that will be directly involved with patient care or directly provide patient care. For example: nurses, therapists, geneticists, dietitians, counselors, emergency medical technicians, opticians, and pharmacists.

Student Placement Prerequisites

Application Information

All AHS student placement requests must originate from your post-secondary institution and be directed through the Health Science Placement Network (HSPnet) or the Student Placement Team.

Requests received from students directly will not be accepted.

Please note:

  • The Student Placement Team require a time frame of 3 months for student placement requests.
  • The Student Placement Team coordinates the majority of AHS clinical student placements.

International Application Information

Students attending an international post-secondary institution (including students from the United States) who wish to request a placement with AHS, should read the international students section of our Frequently Asked Questions. The international post-secondary institution is required to email Student.Placements@ahs.ca directly to discuss the process and prerequisites.

Please note: We require a time frame of 6 months for international student placement requests.

Non-Clinical Placements

A non-clinical placement is one where the individual will not have direct contact with a patient and will not provide care or support for their care. Examples include human resources professionals, finance, maintenance staff, secretaries or administrative assistants.

AHS offers placement opportunities for non-clinical post-secondary students, where a placement is a requirement of the program.

Application Information

  1. Complete the Non-Clinical Placement Request Form
  2. Complete the HSPnet Student Consent Form A.
  3. Attach the following documents:
    • Description of the educational program.
    • Practicum objectives.
    • Student’s resume. (Attach to application to ensure a proper placement is requested)
    • Proof of enrollment. (Required if the request is not submitted by a placement coordinator)
  4. Submit these documents to your placement coordinator at your school. If you are unsure of who your placement coordinator is, consult your program and/or school.

Your placement coordinator will submit the documents mentioned above to us. Once these documents have been received by AHS, we will assist you with finding a suitable placement, wherever possible.
